We were sitting around tables in the Niners’ cafeteria, all of us staring at Trent Baalke. The PR guy said we could ask Baalke questions about the draft. I’ve been through this before.  I knew we could ask questions but Baalke, or any GM, never would answer. So for the hell of it, I started the session by saying to Baalke, “Will you draft a quarterback with the seventh pick?”

He looked startled, poor man. He laughed. And then he said in an amazed voice, “Right out of the blocks. Let’s tell the 31 other teams, ‘Yes, we’re going to draft a quarterback.’ Do you honestly think I’m going to . . . ? No.”

OK, I tried. I hope Trent Baalke got the joke.
