Articles are beginning to appear linking Mets’ shortstop Jose Reyes to the Giants. This makes sense. Reyes is a very good young shortstop and a leadoff hitter. The Giants currently need both of those. The question is, of course, what would the Giants have to give up to get Reyes?

This is where things get interesting. Recently, I spoke with someone who has intimate knowledge of the Mets’ situation. I said the Giants would, at least, have to trade Madison Bumgarner to the Mets for Reyes. This person said not so fast. He reminded me the Mets ownership lost a fortune in the Bernie Madoff scandal. “The Mets need money,” this source told me.

Which means if the Giants come up with the cash and a multi-year deal they may be able to get Reyes who becomes a free agent after this season. This is very interesting.
