Here’s your assignment for today. Name the best sports book you ever read. There’s a lot of stuff out there. Here’s an admission. I find most sports books dismal, really unreadable. But some are glorious. So I’m giving you your chance to make a case for a book you love.

Here is one rule. The book has to be well-written. No junk prose makes the list on the Cohn Zohn. OK?

My selection: “The Sweet Science” by A. J. Liebling. This is a collection of Liebling’s articles from the New Yorker — Liebling no longer is alive. He was a great stylist and had a wonderful feel for boxing. When I was a freshman in college we were assigned his essay about the Rocky Marciano-Archie Moore fight. I never had heard of Liebling and I read this essay and fell in love with his writing and probably knew somewhere deep inside I wanted to try stuff like that.

So that’s my pick. What’s your and why?
