Here are quickie selected quotes from Jerry West’s media session today. There also are a few from Joe Lacob. I apologize for all typoes and grammatical errors. I have a column to write on deadline.

To West on Curry and Ellis: When I watch them play together I wish we had a little more size back there. I think that’s an area you can address. If you watch the playoffs games you can’t run an offense you have to have people who can create off the dribble and both those kids can do that. I think you’ll see them grow together.

The best risk takers do the best.

The way I would value a player, is he versatile? We have 1,2,3,4,5. What’s wrong with having two good guards? I think they’ve got two good guards here.

I think we’re close to having a playoff caliber team. Sometimes you can take giant steps in one season.

To West Re: Lakers in playoffs: I just didn’t see that energy level that’s necessary. Sometimes players use it up. Now everyone’s talking about blow the Lakers up. They’ve got an All-Pro player, they’ve got a guy on the second team, they’ve got the sixth man of the year, they’ve got a promising center in Andrew Bynum. They need some athletes around and probably a little more shooting. But they’re going to be a really good team. Losing might have helped them a little bit to get back and refocus on how hard it is to win.

To West — Do Warriors need major changes? They have the ability to sign free agents.

To me size helps.

To West Re: signing Brian Shaw as Warriors coach: He’s really well-liked by the Lakers players. I’m not even sure frankly who they’ve interviewed here. I know two or three. I’m not sure who else they plan to interview.

To West: How much input will you have on hiring coach? I would hope I will have a voice, which I will have a voice. I’m not going to make that final decision. I don’t want to be the final decision maker. I don’t think it’s fair to the people in place. My biggest reservation was I didn’t want to come here and feel I would overshadow Bob (Myers) or Larry (Riley).

To West: How current is your knowledge of league? How current is my knowledge? I watch every game. I have people calling me – I have agents, executives calling me all the time asking for my opinion. I think I’m well aware of what the league is, very well aware.

Lacob: I’m going to take very seriously any recommendation he (West) has obviously but I also know I’ve got people who spend all day and all night thinking of nothing but basketball, looking at film, scouting around the country and in Europe. It’s not going to be one or the other. We’re going to be able to come to a team-based consensus. If we have a complete dichotomy in the room then someone is going to have to make the call.
