This topic of home plate collisions won’t go away. So, OK think about this.

Some are suggesting a runner must slide into home plate. That would stop runners from crashing into catchers as the runners try to dislodge the ball. That is an interesting idea and it leads to this question. If the runner must slide, can the catcher still block the plate? Remember, the catcher is trying to prevent the runner from scoring.

If the catcher still can block the plate, the confrontation becomes unfair, heavily weighted in favor of the catcher. The runner may not be able to touch the plate with his foot, plus the runner could hurt his foot/ankle, etc. sliding into the catcher.

Well, the way to address that is to mandate the catcher cannot block the plate. He must swipe tag like, say, the second baseman.

Here’s my question: Do you want baseball to be played like this?

I am very interested in your responses.
