Grant here.

Forgive me if this sounds like heresy but Scott Cousins is no culprit. Buster Posey should blame himself for his season-ending injury.

Posey was waiting for the action, the ball and the runner to arrive, while he was on his knees in front of home plate. This is not the proper technique.

Johnny Bench agrees, and correct me if I’m wrong, but he’s the first person to blame Posey publically. He does so in this article here.

Here are selected quotes from Bench:

“First of all, my catchers don’t sit in front of home plate. They stand away from home plate and work back to the plate.”

“I teach my kids to stay away from the plate when you don’t have the ball so the runner actually sees home plate and his thought is, slide. But Buster is laying in front of home plate, and it’s like having a disabled car in the middle of a four lane highway. You’re just going to get smacked.”

Posey should have been on his feet in an athletic, defensive stance. The stance he chose was dangerous and if he ever plays catcher again you can bet he’ll take Bench’s advice.

We here hope for Buster’s speedy recovery.
