I bumped into Tim Kawakami at the Mark Jackson presser today and he asked me to write about New York pizza. Tim used to work in New York and got addicted to the pizza — who wouldn’t? — and when I wrote about it a few weeks ago, that great place DeFara on Avenue J in Flatbush Brooklyn, Tim went into pizza overdrive.

So, Tim, there’s a Red Boy near me that makes good California pizza. Not New York. But good anyway. We’ll share a pie, you me and Iggy.

One other thing, a few years ago my sister went back to the old Brooklyn neighborhood — we Cohns have a homing instinct — and ordered pizza. As she waited for it, she mused out loud, “I wonder why the pizza is so much better in Brooklyn?”

The pizza guy heard her and took the liberty of explaining, “It’s da waw-tah.”

My sister and I say that to each other now — It’s da waw-tah.
