I’m not in the mood to blog about sports this morning. Sorry.

But I am in the mood to blog.

Some background: Last night at the Zohn we watched, for about the fifth time, “Sideways,” that wonderful movie with Paul Giamatti about wine tasting near Santa Barbara and about the fear of impending marriage and about trying not to be a loser. And a lot more.

Sideways is a: buddy movie, a wine movie and it’s also a road trip movie. I’m interested in it as a road trip movie. I love road trip movies. As the characters travel on the road they also travel into themselves, and something changes inside at least one of them. Here’s a very partial list of road trip movies I like.

Rain Man — no explanation needed.

The Last Detail, 1973, Jack Nicholson and Randy Quaid. Nicholson is bringing a prisoner to the brig.

Midnight Run, 1988, Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin. De Niro, a bounty hunter, needs to bring Grodin to LA to collect the bounty.

Animal House — not strictly a road trip movie but it has an all-time great road trip.

OK, those movies will get you started. Can you name other notable road trip movies and tell why you like them. Do you want to play?
