One stalwart Zohner, mendozaline, recommended I read John Mortimer’s autobiography, “Clinging to the Wreckage.” I got it, love it and was reading it late last night when I came upon this passage: “The fact that audiences at the National Theatre rarely break bottles over one another’s heads, and that opera fans seldom knee one another in the groin during the long intervals at Covent Garden, convinces me that the theatre is safer than sport.”

I think Mortimer was onto something. I mean it’s a lot safer at the SF Opera than at Candlestick for 49ers games. Maybe when I retire I’ll become an opera critic. Maybe you should take up opera too.

Your thoughts on sport vs. theater and opera? Have you ever seen anyone at the opera, for example, wearing a Raiders jacket?
