Here is the opening to my Sunday column about what Ahmad Brooks told the media Thursday night:

Everyone who interviewed Ahmad Brooks Thursday night after the 49ers lost to the Broncos said he was a perfect gentleman.

Brooks spoke at his locker, in the sense of not uttering a single worthwhile word. But words did come out of his mouth.

Brooks is famous because he plays linebacker for the 49ers.

Brooks is infamous because on June 8 he allegedly whacked teammate Lamar Divens on the head three times with a beer bottle opening a 3-inch gash. Brooks then is reported to have threatened to shoot Divens with a gun.

During the first two weeks of preseason workouts, the media made several requests to interview Brooks, the bottler. The 49ers denied all requests in clear violation of the NFL’s media policy. Teams are required to make players available to the press.

But the 49ers couldn’t protect Brooks Thursday night. It’s not like Jim Harbaugh could hide Brooks in the broom closet or tell him to take an extra long shower. He might have emerged looking like a prune. So there he was talking.
