At Giants Media Day someone asked Brian Sabean about defending the world’s championship. “To get in the playoffs,” he said, “that’s our goal. We’re not going to start this year — ‘we’re going to be the defending champions and repeat.’ Our goal is to get in the playoffs. We think if we do, we’ll be battle-tested enough to hopefully get through the first round.”

It’s interesting to see the differences between those in the MLB and NFL. Those in the NFL often say “Superbowl or Bust” and feel that the year was a total failure if they fail to win the big one. I much prefer Sabean’s perspective; set an achievable goal and anything beyond that is icing on the cake. It’s a simple fact of life that Bay Area sports teams aren’t going to win every single championship. Claiming that the year was a let down or failure because a championship wasn’t attained is a guaranteed way to set yourself up for disappointment on a regular basis. I watch sports for enjoyment, and I can’t enjoy them if I adopt the “If your not first, your last” viewpoint.

So bravo, Sabean. Keep up the good perspective.

The 49ers losing the Super Bowl, the A’s heroic effort to just win the West, and the Warriors at 30-20,with Stanfords one for the ages Rosebowl victorty..just emphasize the crazy great success of the Giants winning TWO World Championships in three years. How difficult it is in sports..and they did it 2 out of 3 years .Amazing.
How influential is Sabean? Mike Krukow debuted his new “Sabean” beard and similar glasses and hairdo. I bet Mike signs autographs “Brian”. uhuh..

I like Sabean, always have. He has been an even keel for the San Francisco Giants organization for a very long time. I find it so very interesting now how many people are singing his praises when I can recall not too long ago some of those same people wanted to run him out of town. I once again tip my cap the Sabean and the Giants ownership for putting together a great organization, a great product on the field and bringing an amazing place to watch a baseball game to San Francisco. Oh, and thanks for giving us, the fans, a chance to cheer our team on to two championships in three seasons. Bravo. Bravo.
