Kawakami and Papa win awards

Tim Kawakami was named California sportswriter of the year by National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Tim richly deserves this award. I’ll have to try harder in 2013. Greg Papa got named California sportscaster of the year — also richly deserved. Congrats to both.

Sportswriter runs prostitution ring

This item Ira Miller sent to me. It’s about the downturn in our economy and how people have to augment their income when their employers reduce their salaries. One enterprising former sportswriter, Kevin Provencher, started a prostitution ring to get a few extra bucks. What’s a guy to do? He showed enterprise for sure, but he also took advantage of women and broke the law and intimidated one hooker who was going to testify against him. Since when have sportswriters… Read More »

February slump — mine

I am in a February slump. I admit that, sadly. Usually I post on the Zohn several times a day. Something happens and I rush downstairs to my office and start typing like mad. My wife says she can be in the middle of a conversation with me and all of a sudden I’m gone. “The blog?” I hear her mutter as if I’m having a rendezvous with a mistress. Which is to say I’m nuts in love with blogging… Read More »

AOL drops Fanhouse

I had dinner with Marty Lurie last night — he’s in town for some KNBR stuff — and he told me AOL has dropped Fanhouse, its sports division. I did not know this. I like Fanhouse, think they do a good job. I also have friends who work for Fanhouse, friends with families. This news was upsetting to me and shows how websites come and go, offering promise to writers and then taking it away. According to what I know,… Read More »

New 49er beat writer at Press Democrat

As you’ve probably noticed the Press Democrat has a new 49er beat writer. His name is Eric Branch and you’re going to love him. He’s clever, smart, very nice and he works really hard and, wow, can he write. I’d like to add a personal word about the Niner beat at the PD. Mike Silver used to handle that beat — it was before my time, but Mike and I are friends and he recommended me to the PD when… Read More »

Jay Mariotti — what’s the deal?

Jay Mariotti, sportswriter and sports TV guy, got arrested for domestic violence. He has been convicted of nothing. He works sometimes for ESPN and they are looking into his case. This could be embarrassing for ESPN and deadly to Mariotti’s career. I don’t know Mariotti, never met him, hardly ever read him and don’t watch much TV so I have no opinion of him one way or another. I do notice people — especially in the media — seem gleeful about… Read More »

McChrystal and sportswriting

I’m back from my family holiday and I’m way behind on blogging about the news. I’d like to get started with President Obama firing Stanley McChrystal, his top commander in Afganistan. No, I’m not getting into policy. I’m getting into something McChrsytal did not do. He never blamed the Rolling Stone writer who caused all this furor. I bring this up because I deal with athletes all the time who do blame. If they take heat for something they said,… Read More »
