Tim Kawakami was named California sportswriter of the year by National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Tim richly deserves this award. I’ll have to try harder in 2013. Greg Papa got named California sportscaster of the year — also richly deserved. Congrats to both.

I had dinner with Marty Lurie last night — he’s in town for some KNBR stuff — and he told me AOL has dropped Fanhouse, its sports division. I did not know this. I like Fanhouse, think they do a good job. I also have friends who work for Fanhouse, friends with families. Jay Mariotti, sportswriter and sports TV guy, got arrested for domestic violence. He has been convicted of nothing. He works sometimes for ESPN and they are looking into his case. This could be embarrassing for ESPN and deadly to Mariotti’s career. I don’t know Mariotti, never met him, hardly ever read him and don’t watch much TV so I have no opinion of him one way or another.
