Stop the presses. Oh, that’s not enough. Stop the world.

On Thursday night, LeBron James is having a TV show to announce which team he will play for next season. He is buying an hour’s time on ESPN to make this monumental announcement. And the world waits.

All power to James for becoming a giant superstar who can toy with whole franchises, although it would help if he were to win an NBA title. But I have a problem with this TV show idea to announce his future. Basketball is a team game but James is putting himself above any team he plays for.

Let’s say he goes to the Knicks. They will become LeBron James and the Knicks. Or maybe they’ll just be the New York LeBrons.

I know the idea of team sports is out of style in our ego-driven world, especially in the NBA. But the whole idea of team sports is people working together. And no one — I repeat no one — is bigger than the team. Not so in James’ case. He is bigger than whatever team he goes to. The NBA feeds this kind of ego display. That doesn’t mean I have to like or condone it.

I wish his agent would send out a humble press release and James would have the good manners to stay off TV.
