Maybe by now you’ve seen the open letter to the Cleveland Cavs fans by majority owner Dan Gilbert. In the letter Gilbert blasts LeBron James who will leave the Cavs to play for Miami. Among other things Gilbert called James’ move to the Heat “a cowardly betrayal.” He referred to James as “our former hero,” and called him a deserter. He also called him “heartless and callous.”

Hey, James’ TV show was over the top but so is this letter. I can understand why Gilbert and Cleveland fans are upset. But NBA basketball is business and has nothing to do with the kind of loyalty Gilbert is demanding. As far as I know James played out his contract and gave the Cavs value for what they paid him. With his contract over he is entitled to work for any team he wants if that team also wants him. That’s how business works. James owed Gilbert and Cleveland nothing.
